How to play Crazy Eights

Crazy Eights is a quick, friendly game of matching cards: be the first to get rid of all your cards. Eights are wild.

The rules

• With two players, each gets 7 cards; with three or four, 5 cards. The next card is turned face up to start the pile (an eight is put back).
• On your turn, play a card that matches the top card’s suit or rank: on a 7♥ you can play any heart or any 7.
• Eights are wild: play one at any time and name the suit the next player must follow.
• If you can’t play, or don’t want to, draw from the deck. You can keep drawing until you find a card to play.
• If the deck runs out and you can’t play, you pass.

Scoring

The first player to play their last card wins the hand and scores for the cards left in everyone else’s hands. The first to 100 points wins the game.

If nobody can play and the deck is empty, the hand is blocked: the player with the lowest total in their hand wins it.

Tips

• Save your eights for when you’re stuck. They’re also expensive if you’re caught holding them.
• When you play an eight, name the suit you hold the most of.
• If the next player has only one or two cards left, change the suit to one they’re less likely to have.
