How to play Canfield solitaire

Canfield is a fast, classic solitaire named after a 1890s casino owner. You race to build all four suits on the foundations, starting from a rank chosen by the deal, with a reserve pile feeding the table.

The layout

• The reserve (top right): 13 cards, top one face up.
• One foundation card is dealt to start. Its rank is the base: every foundation starts with that rank.
• Four columns of one card each.
• The deck (top left): the other 34 cards, turned over three at a time.

The rules

• Build each foundation up by suit from the base rank, going round the corner: if the base is a 7, a foundation goes 7, 8 … Q, K, A, 2 … 6.
• In the columns, build down in alternating colors, also going round the corner (a black King can go on a red Ace).
• You can move the top card of a column, or the whole column together.
• When a column empties, it’s filled from the reserve straight away. Once the reserve is gone, any card can fill it.
• Tap the deck to turn over three cards; only the top one can be played. Go through the deck as often as you like.
• You win when all 52 cards are on the foundations.

How to play here

1. Tap a card (from the reserve, the columns or the waste) and it moves to the best place it fits.
2. Tap the deck to turn over three cards; tap it again when it’s empty to go through the deck again.
3. Undo as often as you like, and tap Hint for a suggestion.

Tips

• Emptying the reserve is the real goal. Play reserve cards whenever you can.
• Don’t rush cards to the foundations if they’re holding a place for a reserve card in the columns.
• Watch the base rank on the empty foundation spaces: that’s the card each suit needs next.
